DCU Rugby 7's team win bronze

DCU Force, the Dublin College's men's Sevens side, finished in third place in the recent European Universities Rugby Sevens tournament held in Cordoba, Spain. DCU won the IRFU's Nokia Student Sevens event in April and geared up for this tournament with an impressive showing at the Kinsale Sevens

With over 80 staff and volunteers involved in the organisation of the tournament, the opening ceremony was a grand affair with each team walking into the stadium behind their national flag to the tune of local music and dance.
DCU Force were captained by Max Rantz-McDonald who has represented Ireland in the AIB Club International and was involved with the Ireland Sevens squad previously.
They lost their opening game to Coimbra but scored good wins over Bristol and Cordoba on day one. Day two saw them go down to Montpelier before beating Barcelona and Mainz.
On the final day they bagged a third place play-off spot after beating Lisbon. They went on to win bronze with a 42-0 victory over Bristol.
It was the eventual champions, the University of Coimbra (Portugal) who beat the always competitive Irish side in the semi-final.
The Portuguese champions included four players who played on the IRB World Sevens circuit this season and if this was not enough to contend with, the temperature soared in the midday Spanish sun.
DCU lost by three tries to nil with Coimbra showing all their experience and the benefit of a pre-tournament training camp.
The fiercely-contested final was won by the University of Coimbra who overcame the University of Montpelier (France) by seven points to nil and in the women's final; the University of Bordeaux (France) beat the University of A Coruna (Spain) by 10-7.

Michael Kearney is Player of the Year posted on 07/06/10 by Brendan Johnston

The Irish Colleges Rugby season reached its conclusion recently with the announcement of the 2010 Treasury Holdings Irish Colleges Player of the Year award winner. The winning player is Michael Kearney, a first year student studying for a BA in Sports and Exercise (Rugby) at the Institute of Technology, Carlow.

John Bruder, Managing Director of Treasury Holdings, presents Carlow IT's Michael Kearney with his award.
This season, Michael Kearney has represented the Irish Colleges in internationals against the French Students and English Students. He was also an integral part of the Leinster Colleges team which retained the Irish Colleges Interprovincial title with wins over Connacht and Ulster.

Michael captained IT Carlow to the All-Ireland Freshmen Cup with a hard-fought 28-13 win over NUI Maynooth, scoring a decisive try in this game to push his side to victory.

He has previously represented the Irish Youths and Leinster Under-19s and plays his club rugby in Clontarf RFC.

Treasury Holdings, the international real estate company and official partner of the Irish Rugby Football Union, initiated the Irish Colleges Players of the Year Award to recognise outstanding merit and achievement in student rugby.

The award was decided through voting by the coaches of each of the college teams participating in the Treasury Holdings Domestic Colleges Division One and Two leagues and the coaches at interprovincial and national level.

With over 25,000 students in the third level Colleges across Ireland, the Colleges game has been identified as a key development area as part of the IRFU's Strategic Plan 2012.

Commenting on the award, John Bruder, Managing Director of Treasury Holdings Ireland, said: "We are delighted to announce the first ever Treasury Holdings Irish Colleges Player of the Year award winner.

"The idea for the award came about last year as both Treasury Holdings and the IRFU wanted to recognise the skill and hard work that the players put in at this level, in a bid to make the international team.

"Michael is a great player and a worthy winner. Well done to him and to all the players who participated in the leagues this year.

"It is great to see the sport developing at Colleges level and we are delighted to be partnering the IRFU to develop both serious and social rugby in Colleges across Ireland.

"This award is set to become a highlight in the Colleges rugby calendar each year and we hope to see the winners line out for the Irish national team some day."

Award winner Michael said: "I am delighted to have won and would like to thank Treasury Holdings for the award. I would also like to thank my fellow players and coaches form the teams I have played with this season.

"Without their support and hard work, I would not be in this position."

The Irish Colleges Rugby Union incorporates Universities, Agricultural Colleges, and Institutes of Technology, Army and Garda Colleges along with other third level institutions.

39 Universities and Colleges and 7,500 students are involved at this level, covering urban and rural Ireland both north and south.

IT Tralee win Division 2 Womens Rugby Cup in style posted on 19/03/10 by Brendan Johnston

IT Tralee 65 NUI-Maynooth 0

The final of the Irish Colleges Women's Rugby Division 2 Final ,organised by CUSAI,held at the impressive sports facilities at the University of Ulster Jordonstown. Friday's game was indeed an historic one for the Institute of Tralee Women's rugby side, for this was their third final in as many years without a win.

This was the third occasion that the Tralee girls have reached the final stage ,having been defeated on the last two occasions.photos

Both sides started the game with great vigour and determination but despite the strong presence of both sets of forwards throughout the game,it soon became apparant that the Tralee girls showed more speed, determination and a sense of purposethroughout the game. The first try by Tralee in the 4th minute was ably scored by Zoe Dunbar who showed great pace and gazelle like speed throughout the
game, sidestepping many on her way through the NUI-Maynooth defence for the first of three tries.Scores came in rapid succession when Dunbar scored her second try in the 7th minute. This was quickly followed by a try by No 10 Ciara O Connor.Anne Marie Murphy had a dream of a try in the 13th minute followed again by Dunbar who scored in the 22nd minute before Murphy wrapped it up in the last minute of the first half leaving the score at 36-0 to the Tralee girls.

The Maynooth girls never lost their ambitions, neverthe less Tralee went int superdrive in the second period with scores from Jayne Mc Mahon(two tries),Lisa Murphy(two tries),Marion Keele(1 Try),with Ciara O Connor finishing the game with the final try leaving the final score 65-0.IT Tralee
